Station Platforms

Ricoh GR · Delta 3200 · 2022

People in the pictures, mostly children with their parents, were asked, mostly with a nod, and nearly all of them said yes.

With Station Platforms I wanted to show the place as it is on an ordinary day, with the bins and the scaffolding left in. I printed contact sheets at a borrowed workbench and chose the frames after leaving them overnight. I returned one Friday in November with the Ricoh GR, and nothing broke. The light around the marina changes quickly, and many of the best frames were taken on grey August mornings.

The tones in Station Platforms are as Delta 3200 rendered them, quieter than on screen. Many of these frames were made within walking distance of the coast path, on foot.

Notes

The Ricoh GR jammed one wet weekend in September, so part of the series was made with an old wide-angle lens borrowed from a friend from the walking group. The layout of this page follows the time of day rather than the map.

A few of the best frames came from a single afternoon near the lake, under low cloud. I kept coming back to the same few hillsides over the spring until I knew every shadow. Work on Station Platforms began with a single roll and grew over a good part of 2018.

Most of Station Platforms was edited in a café near the castle hill, with the contact sheets spread out on the floor. Most visits to the piers started just after sunrise and ended when the rain set in.

I shot this mostly with one lens on the Ricoh GR, which made me stand closer. The series is still open; I add one new photograph whenever the weather allows, usually after a walk along the harbour wall. These photographs were made over several visits with the Ricoh GR, starting one autumn when the days were getting shorter. There is a quietness to the fields before the shops open that I tried hard to keep.
